They'll Name A Star After Us
by: yitsuin

Ours is a love story written in the stars. At first, the letters are for herself, tucked away in the bottom drawer of her bedside table under carefully-folded shirts, tucked away in the corners of her heart. At first, they’re notes in her journal, scrawling down her happiest memories from primary and middle school between the ruled lines. She puts her thoughts to paper, of fond smiles and wind-tousled hair and an arm slung loosely around her shoulder.

“I still can’t believe I’m buying enemy military secrets for a plate of fish.” I paused with the last piece of smoked salmon halfway to my mouth and looked over at the undercover princess sitting next to me under the tree. That was the first thing she had said to me all night, apart from a casual “hello, Ricochet” when she had caught me trying to sneak up on her in a little harmless fun. (Note to self: never underestimate magically armed royalty while inside their enchanted forest.)

Four pm. Saturday. November. A car pulls into the driveway—it is white, and I am unfamiliar with it, but I suspect I know to whom it belongs anyway, and I am elated. I can hardly wait—I am a child again, and it is amusement-park-day. My stomach is impossible to discipline, and I don’t care. I am almost in orbit. Come ON, Pete let’s GO!

The warm sunlight filtered through the leaves of the Narra tree beside the courtyard, casting scattered light upon the ground. Amidst the peaceful chirping of the birds, echoes of joyful laughter rang out within the yard. A pair of children, a young boy, and a little girl were running merrily around the tree, bursting out in a fit of delightful laughter from time to time. “Slow down!” the young boy, wearing Camisa de Chino and pants filled with mud stains, exclaimed while chasing the young girl.

Near the bad side of town, the bus stopped. This stop was new to me, I almost waved to the bus driver before remembering this town wasn’t small like my own, everything here was automated. When I stepped off, my foot hit the concrete harder than expected, and the bus bounced slightly as it floated above the pavement.

His hand works its way up her calf, sliding past her knee toward her thigh. “Clear,” the Guard automates to his Supervisor. The full-body frisk concludes a laundry list of measures to confirm Amber’s security clearance.

As she trudged down the alley, Cenessa spotted a small rodent nibbling on a piece of garbage. The sight brought on an unusual amount of emotion. As she passed by, the critter finished its dinner and scurried off. Cenessa loathed the putrid smell of rotten food that wafted through the narrow pathway. Tonight, the stink was even more pungent than usual. Yet, it was the quickest route to her place, so she accepted the odorous consequence in exchange for expediency.

Her saunter propelled the beta male in me to new depths of depravity. I was not the only one engrossed enough to pledge my undying affection, as I looked around I noticed the whole room was hers. Like the shy, pudgy boy I vowed I would never again be; the best I could offer was milk with her oatmeal.

“Trust me. You need this, Lara.” I raise a skeptical eyebrow at my best friend, Katie. She has a confident smile on her face, and her eyes are flashing with more energy than the strobe lights on the dance floor. “Oh, really? I need to have sex with a complete stranger?”
